We got in touch with Tikka Hun, the founder of Tak-Tik, a hub which specialises in Graphic Recording and Strategic Visualization. They use Graphic Recording or Strategic Visualization to help people work and communicate better through visuals.
Tell us more about Tak-Tik.
We provide 3 types of services: graphic recording, strategic visualisation and training. The idea of graphic recording is to summarise and make sense of a live conversation. We would attend a live conversation, be it a meeting, conference or workshop and record the conversation in graphic form. When I say graphic, we use keywords in the form of words and visuals and make sense of the conversation. The purpose of this is to allow participants have one big clear picture of their conversation and at the end of a session.
As for strategic visualisation, clients would provide us with materials in the form of PowerPoint or text and we will digest it and translate the text base data into visuals for them. So instead of 10 pages of PDF or 20 PowerPoint slides, they will have a more concise and conceptual vision in a visual form.
Lastly, we also do training for graphic recording or strategic visualisation. We teach people how to do note taking or flipcharts in a visual form instead of the usual point form. We teach them how to use simple graphics like circles and colours to produce a more digestible flipchart information.

How does this differ from mind-mapping?
A lot of people associate this to mind-mapping but it is different because mind-mapping relies on personal input and output. Graphic recording is when we mind-map for others and the content comes from others mind. Mind-mapping has only one structure, from the center towards the outer. But for graphic recording, we can have different kinds of flow and structure depending on the conversation, be it linear, centralised or any other different form.
How did Tak-Tik come about?
The company started in Belgium in 2003 as a visual communication company where I mainly did graphic designing and communication campaigns. In 2010, I had the opportunity to be part of my first visual facilitation workshop in Tokyo for a French consultant firm Cap Gemini working with the MG Taylor™ methodology and that was when I found that it is an interesting method of communication compared to what I have been doing in the advertising industry where I don’t get to meet the end users of my work.
I found this very interesting as I can see the direct impact of how my work can benefit people. I slowly moved into this field when the advertising business was declining during the economic downturn and at the same time, there was more demand for this method of accelerated solution of working as people wanted a more efficient way on how to work faster and smarter.

What were you doing before you formed Tak-Tik?
Before I returned to Malaysia, I spent 12 years travelling throughout Europe. When in France, I took up French lessons and soon after I was headed to London and I did a Bachelors degree in Visual Communication. From there I paved my way to Europe and became a freelance designer for a few advertising company before Tak-Tik was born.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I think my life experience as a whole influence my work – the things I have explored, the travelling, the people I’ve met along the way. Good at drawing is not all as behind the scenes, I need to be able to understand different things, read other people’s minds, distill what is important and this requires some life experience and exposure from other domain besides art.

Can you share with us some of your past work?
We have worked with a range of firms from different fields. Some of our past clients include KMPG, Ernest & Young, Geometry Global, Grab Car, Volkswagon, HSBC, AIG, Standard Charter, Carlsberg, LVMH, L’oreal and also NGO’s like WWF and World Health Organisation.
We’ve also attended conferences and forums like TEDxKL, Khazanah Megatrends Forum and Innovating Malaysia Conference. Also, we’ve been invited to international conferences and graphic recording in Indonesia, Australia, United States, Hong Kong, Dubai and Korea to name a few countries.

What are your long-term plans for Tak Tik?
I want to bring more awareness to the Asian market because graphic recording is used slightly differently in Asia. When I was working for a foreign company, graphic recording is usually used to help people communicate better. When they see their own conversation being recorded, it becomes tangible and it helps them solidify or shape their speech into a more defined manner.
But in Asia and specifically Malaysia, I am hired to do it because they find it beautiful and they like the WOW effect but clients don’t see the benefit of this tool on how it can improve communication. Even participants of a seminar commented that it is a beautiful piece of work instead of how this can visually help them in their work. This is why we offer training and workshops to corporates and young people as well.
We also wish to expand and bring in new talent and hopefully the marriage of this visual tool can be well appreciated and used in the corporate world or fields where people don’t use visual tools in their work.
Lastly, I would also like to dedicate more creative part of the work to support NGOs or for-profit organisations which deal with environmental issues, social issues, humanity issues. While corporate have a budget to hire graphic recorders, a lot of NGOs are dealing with much more complex problems which directly or indirectly improves the lifestyle and I think that is more important.
